Darwin’s Paradox! Review

Darwin’s Paradox! review hero

Some games immediately stand out because of photorealistic graphics or massive open worlds. Darwin’s Paradox! instead succeeds through creativity and clever gameplay design. What initially looks like a simple platformer quickly reveals itself as a much more layered experience thanks to one key decision: making you control an octopus, which is original on its own.

Visually, the game is very pretty. The environments are colorful, detailed, and fluidly animated, helping create a world that feels alive even when little is being said. The main character itself is proof that memorable protagonists do not always need dialogue. Much like the great silent gaming mascots of the past, Darwin creates a bond by managing to become instantly recognizable through movement, expressions, and personality alone.

Our Octopus

The platforming is where the game finds its strongest balance. Challenges are difficult enough to keep players engaged and determined to retry sections, but never so punishing that frustration takes over. It constantly pushes you to improve without making progress feel impossible, which is something many modern platformers struggle to achieve.

What truly separates Darwin’s Paradox! from more traditional entries in the genre is the way movement works. Playing as an octopus completely changes how you approach navigation. Instead of simply moving from left to right, you are encouraged to think vertically and creatively. Climbing walls, moving across ceilings, and discovering hidden routes creates a far more multilayered experience than expected, not to forget you can also swim. Many collectible paths and secret sections can only be accessed because of the creature’s unique mobility, and this gives exploration a rewarding feel throughout the adventure.

There is also some replayability present, especially for completionists aiming for the Platinum trophy. Returning to earlier stages with a better understanding of movement mechanics opens up missed routes and hidden objectives, adding extra value beyond a single playthrough.

This Octopus is on fire

That said, the game does feel slightly held back by a lack of overall polish. While the core ideas are strong, there are moments where animations, pacing, or level refinement could have used more development time. None of these issues ruin the experience, but they do prevent the game from reaching the higher tier of platforming classics it occasionally hints at becoming.

In the end, Darwin’s Paradox! is an inventive and enjoyable platformer that succeeds thanks to smart movement mechanics, satisfying challenge, and a genuinely memorable protagonist. It may not be perfectly polished, but it offers enough creativity and charm to stand out in a crowded genre.

The Good

  • solid platformer with a verticality twist
  • lovable silent octopus’ mascot
  • gameplay that keeps re-trying engaging and not frustrating

The Bad

  • overall, could have used more polish
  • some limited replayability

Final Rating: 75% - Darwin’s Paradox is a solid platformer that gambles on the movement of a new mascot, risk that pays out as the Octopus is an easily lovable one. Worth having an eye for a sequel as potentially all ingredients for a very good IP legacy are there.
