Q: What happened to the weather?
A: Weather effects, like rain, snow, thunderstorms, etc., were removed by Maxis
near the end of the development cycle. I don't know why, and I don't think
anyone does (but Maxis), but my guess involves two words: expansion pack.
Q: Where do I put downloaded skins, glasses, etc.?
A: In your "My Documents" folder, you will see a folder the game created named
"EA Games". Open this folder, then open "The Sims 2", and finally, open
"Downloads". Put all downloaded items into here. This includes skins,
glasses, faces, beards, makeup, bodies, and what have you. DO NOT put lots
in this folder. Instead, all lots should be made up of an .exe that will
install the lot to the proper directory for you.
Q: How do I build roads and lakes in a neighborhood?
A: You need SimCity 4: Rush Hour to create neighborhoods. You use SimCity 4 to
create a region, and add all the roads, lakes and mountains you like. Save
it, and when you go to create a neighborhood in The Sims 2, use that region
as the base, and you've got your own layout.
Q: Why do I get slowdown with max speed?
A: Most computers, even good ones, are affected by this. Using the maximum
speed slows your system down, because everything is moving super fast.
You've got Sims moving (or sleeping), people walking by, things floating
around (butterflies outside maybe, or even cockroaches inside),
gardener/maid/repairman, reflections... Everything adds up. If you
experience a lot of slowdown when using this, zoom in very close to an empty
spot of the lot, and it should be fine.
Q: How do I WooHoo in public?
A: Go to a community lot that has a changing room. Have one sim "Try On" some
clothing. Once he/she gets into the changing room, click on another Sim and
choose "Ask to Join". If the Sim likes you enough, they'll get into the
changing room with you and WooHoo. If they don't, they'll reject you.
Q: What the hell? I can't build any walls!
A: You either have the pirated version of the game (bastard), or you used a
NO-CD patch because of the problems with the DVD version. If you have the
pirated version, burn in hell. If you have the DVD version, you'll have to
wait for a patch by Maxis, if one is ever released, or return your copy and
buy the standard CD-ROM edition, which comes on four discs.
Q: How do I listen to custom music?
A: Put any MP3 files you want to listen to in the "EA Games/The Sims 2/Music"
directory, into one of the folders. This directory is created after you run
the game for the first time, so don't worry if you've just installed it and
it's not there. Once back in the game, you can choose which songs you want
to play by going to options, audio options, and then choosing the proper
area (stereo, buy, build, etc.)
Q: Can I watch my own movies on the television?
A: Yes. If you want your own movie, like a music video by a band you like, all
you have to do is convert it to .AVI format using some program. There are
several out there, some free, some you have to pay for. Try to use a
program that doesn't leave a logo on the conversion, otherwise the logo will
probably take up three quarters of the screen, making the video useless.
The in-game video recording tool records files in .AVI format, so if you
want to have custom Sim movies play, just record the video in the game, and
place it in the appropriate directory, since it's already in .AVI.
