While basements are possible to build, they aren't exactly the easiest thing to
do. In fact, it seems as though it was put it as kind of a side thought, since
there is no documentation or any word from Maxis on basements. So, here's a
short tutorial on building basements. I'll probably make a video showing how
to build a video if there is enough demand for one.
1) Build a foundation of any size you want.
2) Remove the entire middle of the foundation, leaving only the sides.
3) Go to "Underground View" mode by hitting the "Down Floor" icon until you see
underneath the foundation; the very lowest level possible. Use the
wallpaper tool, and find a design that has a baseboard. Plaster this over
the wall of the foundation.
4) Use the terrain tool to lower the ground until you see the baseboard, then
stop. You can go lower if you want, but you have to see the baseboard for
it to work.
5) Use the terrain tool to flatten the ground from the position below the
baseboard.
6) Use any carpet to cover the entire grass.
7) Return to the first floor view, and choose any carpeting you want. Decide
where you want to place the staircase, and put a piece of carpeting in FRONT
of that tile; this will be the top landing.
8) Choose the Stairs tool, and pick any Connecting Stair. Place the cursor on
the edge of that one carpet piece you put, and angle it. The connecting
stairs should point down, and will touch the bottom of the floor.
9) You can now carpet the entire upper floor, except for the few tiles by the
stairs, and your Sims will use those stairs to go downstairs to their
basement.
