| [5] Death & Disaster |
|-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
There are a number of way Sims can die, which is good for those of us who are
really evil bastards deep down inside. Of course, with good playing, you can
make it so your Sims only die of old age. But evil will always triumph,
because good... is dumb. All forms of death, except for most drowning cases
and old age, have the potential to be reversed if a Sim successfully pleads
with the Grim Reaper.
When a Sim dies, their wealth is split up and given out as inheritence. The
higher the dead Sim's aspiration, and the better his relationship with other
Sims are, determines how much money will be awarded for inheritence, so it's a
good idea to keep family members happy with the near-dead Sim, while keeping
the near-dead Sim's aspiration high.
Babies and toddlers can never die, no matter what.
This section will list how your Sims can die, how to cause/prevent that kind of
death, and what color your dead Sim's ghost will be.

Abduction
=========
Your Sims can be abducted by aliens if you use the telescope to "Stargaze"
between 7:00pm and 2:00am. This doesn't always happen, so don't be upset if
your Sim doesn't get abducted, or if you think it's a glitch. There is nothing
terrible about being abducted, but your Sim's needs will randomize throughout
the entire abduction, until you are finally returned with your needs moved
around. If you had perfect bladder before, you may be ready to pee on the
floor.
If your Sim is an adult male, and you get abducted, you will ALWAYS return
pregnant. After the three days, your Sim will give birth to an alien baby,
usually with black eyes and green skin. It's just like any other baby, and
once it grows up, it'll be just like any other toddler, child, teen and elder.
Abductions will not kill your Sim, and only male and female adults can be
abducted.

Burglars
========
Every so often, a burglar may attempt to break into your home between 10:00pm
and 4:00am, usually when your Sims are sleeping. The burglar will sneak in
from one end of the lot, and enter your house. He'll go through a few rooms,
basically seeing what you have, and will start stealing your most expensive
stuff. He'll only take up to five items. If you have a burglar alarm, as soon
as the burglar enters the door, it will set off and the police will show up.
The burglar panics at the alarm, and will attempt to take off.
If the cop shows up in time, they will get into a fight with the burglar, and
you will see them fight like you would if you did an "Attack -> Fight"
interaction. If the burglar wins the fight, the cop will be lying on the floor
and the burglar will take off. If the officer wins, he'll arrest the burglar.
If a burglar is arrested and didn't steal anything from you, you'll get $500 in
reward money. If the burglar is arrested but did steal something, you'll get
money for the depreciated value of the object, but you won't get a replacement
object.
Both Buy and Build modes are disabled so you can't move items away from the
burglar before the cop shows up.

Diseases
========
There are several kinds of diseases your Sims can contract. Teenagers, adults
and elders can get sick, but babies, toddlers and children are safe. The kinds
of diseases in The Sims 2 are:
Cold
Flu
Food Poisoning
Pneumonia
Virus
Cold is the basic disease. There is a chance of contracting it whenever you go
to work or school, so it is technically unavoidable, unless you're unemployed.
You'll be able to tell if you've got a cold when your Sims start coughing and
sneezing. The cold is very contagious, and any interactions with other Sims
have a high chance of giving that Sim a cold. As bad as it is, the cold won't
kill you. If you don't treat your Sim's cold, it will eventually turn into
pneumonia.
You can contract the flu if you are near roaches. If your house is clean and
there are never any roaches, you will never get the flue. You'll know if you
have the flu, because your Sim will cough and will go to the bathroom
constantly as a result of diarrhea. Like the cold, the flu is contagious.
Unlike the cold, however, the flu can kill you if you don't treat it.
Next up is food poisoning, which can only occur if you eat spoiled food, or
"Lick Clean" a plate that is green and has flies swarming around it. Food
poisoning isn't contagious, so you can still chat with people and play games
without worrying about spreading it. If your Sim starts throwing up or suffers
nausea, chances are they have food poisoning. If untreated, it can kill you.
Pneumonia is a more severe version of the cold, and you'll only get it if you
fail to treat the cold. Signs of pneumonia are coughing and your Sim feeling
tired all the time. It's contagious, but not as bad as the cold, and unlike
the cold, it will kill you if you don't rest.
Finally, there's the virus, which will infect your Sim if you fail at work on
the SimSanto Inc. Bio Station. If your Sim has a low Logic skill when using
the machine, the vial you make could be a dangerous virus. The darker the
vial, the worse the virus. You or other Sims can contract a virus from it, and
it's very contagious, more so than the cold or flu. And it will kill you if it
isn't treated. The best way to treat it is to have a highly skilled Sim make a
remedy from the Bio Station.
There is also a sixth disease, but it's not really a disease, it won't kill you
and it isn't contagious. It is Morning Sickness, and will only affect pregnant
Sims (either females, or males who have been abducted). It has the same signs
as food poisoning, which throwing up and having nausea. It only occurs on the
first day after you "Try for Baby". Morning sickness is also a good way to
tell if the "Try for Baby" action worked, as it means your Sim is most
definitely pregnant.
In order to rest and cure the disease, you need about fourteen hours of sleep.
Sleep can include sleeping in the bed, napping, or at the worst, passing out
and sleeping on the floor. After fourteen hours, which don't have to be
consecutive hours, your Sim will be cured. If you fail to get your Sim rest
within five to seven days, they will die of their disease. As mentioned above,
you can also have a skilled Sim produce an antidote with the science career
reward object, the Bio Station.

Drowning
========
Drowning is the only cause of death that you have to deliberatly cause. Order
a Sim to go swimming, and once they are in the pool, remove the ladder. Once
the Sim's hunger or energy drop to complete red, they drown. Because your Sims
cannot walk on water (they aren't Jesus, after all), you won't be able to plead
with the Grim Reaper unless the dead Sim happened to die near the edge of the
pool, and the Grim Reaper is standing near the edge.
Children, teenagers, adults and elders can all drown.
--==--==--
Electrocution
=============
Electrouction happens whenever a Sim with a low Mechanical skill attempts to
repair a broken object. Highly skilled Mechanical Sims can also get
electrocuted, but it doesn't happen as often. While it may seem weird, the
electrocution itself doesn't kill you. Whenever you get electrocuted, your
needs will drop in half, so if three or more of them are at the halfway point
before your electrocution, you'll die as a result.
Teenagers, adults and elders can all be electrocuted.
--==--==--
Fire
====
Fire is one of the more common causes of death, and can happen by your hands,
or autonomously. Fire can break out because of these four reasons:
- Your cooking level is too low, and your Sim uses the stove or microwave,
which has a good chance of causing a fire.
- You ruin food, which has a small chance of causing a fire.
- You go to cook food, and then do something else while it is cooking, such as
answering the phone. The longer the cooked food remains in the stove past
it's cooking time, the better the chance of it catching fire. Smoke will
come from the oven before it catches fire, to give you fair warning.
- If electroucted while repairing something, there is a small chance the object
will catch fire.
When a fire breaks out, it starts with the object that causes the fire. If
there is a smoke detector in the same room where the fire broke out, the fire
department will always show up in time to extinguish the fire before the object
is destroyed. If the fire spreads, it will spread to any adjacent items until
there is nothing left in the room, at which point it will spread tile by tile.
If the fire doesn't find any objects as it spreads by tiles, it will burn out.
Any objects that can't be saved will turn into a pile of ash. Ash will cause
your Environment score to drop, and they must be cleaned up. If a Sim stands
too close to the fire, they may be set ablaze themselves, and if they aren't
extinguished in time, they'll die.
Children, teenagers, adults and elders can be killed by a fire.
Both Buy and Build modes are disabled so you can't move items away from a fire
or delete them.
--==--==--
Flooding
========
While not a major disaster, flooding can seriously reduce your Environment
score, especially if it's an object that continuously leaks, like the sink or
shower. Letting it go too long can cause an entire house to flood, to the
point where water puddles will start appearing outside. To stop flooding,
unclog the toilet and fix broken sinks, showers and tubs, and then mop up the
puddles.
Flooding won't kill anybody.
--==--==--
Fly Swarm
=========
The most rare cause of death (moreso than the satellite), this requires a Sim's
house to be extremely dirty. You'll need at least fifteen plates with flies
swarming over them to have this happen. Once your house is beyond dirty, have
your Sim walk over a plate that has flies on it. There is a very, very rare
chance that all the flies in the room will swarm the Sim, killing him.
Teenagers, adults and elders can be eaten by flies.
--==--==--
Old Age
=======
When your Sims become elders, their life will span fifteen to twenty-five Sim
days. Once this period is up, your Sim will die of old age. When this occurs,
your Sim is dead, and you can't bring them back by pleading. Obviously, the
only Sims who can die of old age are Elders.
--==--==--
Satellite
=========
There is a rare chance that, when your Sim stargazes (without a telescope) or
watch clouds, a satellite may come down from outer space, killing your Sim
instantly. It doesn't happen very often, but it can. As kind of a sadistic
bonus, you can sell the satellite in buy mode, kind of a way of benefitting
from your Sim's death.
Teenagers, adults and elders can be crushed by the satellite.
--==--==--
Scared to Death
===============
If a Sim dies and haunts the house, there is a possibility that the dead Sim
will perform the "Scare" interaction on a living Sim. If this happens to a
living Sim, and that Sim has three needs which are at the halfway mark (half
green, half red), they will die from fright. This is rare, and what happens
more often is your Sim will either piss themselves and run from the room, or
just run. Elders have a higher chance of being scared to death than the other
ages.
Teenagers, adults and elders can be scared to death.
--==--==--
Starvation
==========
When a Sim's hunger needs goes completely red, they'll die about an hour later
if they don't eat anything. Starvation will kill teenagers, adults and elders,
but if a baby, toddler or child's hunger drops completely, they will be taken
by the social worker.
