Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds Review
Extra Features: Online Multiplayer (2-8 players), Leaderboards, Download Content
If you were a fighting game fan back in the days of the Dreamcast around the late 90's then you most likely remember Marvel VS Capcom 2. The game introduced 3 on 3 tag team fighting and was an overall immense upgrade to its predecessor, Marvel VS Capcom. The game had an expansive roster of over 50 characters brought in from the entire VS fighting series that Capcom established along with over-the-top special moves and super moves. To this day, Marvel VS Capcom 2 stands as one of the best fighters of all time.
Several years after the release of Marvel VS Capcom 2, we finally have a sequel and the sequel is every bit as good as the second installment! Marvel VS Capcom 3 (MvC3) reintroduces us to the familiar 3 on 3 tag team fighting established in MvC 2 and it offers several upgrades to the game that make the fighting even more enjoyable. MvC3 has a total of 36 characters from the start and there are other planned downloadable characters on the way. The visuals are enhanced greatly in MvC3 to the point of having a comic book style appearance as opposed to hand drawn characters.
One might think that MvC3's smaller character line up pales in comparison to MvC2's expansive line-up, but MvC3's characters are all redone! Even the returning characters have a somewhat different feel to them. Just about all characters have a new feel. Practically none of them are taken directly from other games without some changes. This feeling of newness leaves MvC3 feeling very fresh for quite a while. Unlike MvC2, a player can't just pick one of the familiar characters and adjust to some slight tweaks since all characters have a different feel to them!
MvC3 brings in several new faces from both the Capcom and Marvel universe. The Capcom side is composed of Akuma, C. Viper, Trish, Amaterasu, Hsien-Ko, Wesker, Tron, Chun-Li, Dante, Spencer, Morrigan, Arthur, Chris, Zero, Ryu, Viewtiful Joe, Felicia and Haggar. The Marvel side is made up of Taskmaster, Iron Man, Storm, Magneto, Sentinel, Dormammu, M.O.D.O.K., Thor, Spider-man, Deadpool, Phoenix, She-Hulk, Dr. Doom, Super Skrull, Captain America, Wolverine, X-23 and Hulk. Some of the newer characters share a slight similarity to past characters, but each character is very unique in MvC3.
All characters have a different strategy that one should use while playing as them. One of the most unique characters is Phoenix. She takes double damage whenever she is hit, but has a super move which places an aura over her that will make her heal red health almost immediately. She also recharges her red health fast when tagged out. She can get KO'd within a blink of an eye, so a player must be very careful while playing as her. She has the most unique super in the game however. With a level 5 super gauge, once she is beaten, she will automatically perform her Dark Phoenix super and her life will fully recharge instantly and all her moves will be more powerful for as long as she remains alive.
There are several characters that can be played aggressively and there are several characters that are best used from a distance. Chris Redfield can toss grenades from a distance and chip away at his opponent's life gauge to make them come to him while characters such as Wesker can completely dominate a character with fast teleports to confuse them and constant aggressiveness. The familiar projectile characters such as Storm and Iron Man can easily chip away damage from opponents from a distance and characters such as Wolverine and Spiderman can make an opponent scared to move with their constant pressure game.
Characters such as Haggar, She-Hulk and Hulk can quickly take health away from opponents with their highly damaging attacks and grabs. Some characters such as Ryu and Captain America can be played defensively or offensively depending on the situation. MvC3 offers tons of variety in its character line-up with all the different styles that are available. All characters have four colors to choose from when selecting them. Some of the colors make the character look similar to another character such as Wesker's Vergil outfit and Viewtiful Joe's Alastor color.
