Bloom Box (iOS) Review

In Short
Bring gardens into bloom with this enjoyable iOS puzzle game.

Bloom Box is a puzzle game of creating chain reactions ' not of explosives, but of flowers. Blooms, not booms. The puzzles are placed on a grid, with boxes and stars scattered about. Each box has a pattern on the front which indicates the directions in which it will explode, I mean bloom. If another box is in the radius of the box when it goes off, it will set off that box next, and so on, and so on. The goal of each level is to set off all of the boxes, but if you want to earn that ubiquitous mobile game three-star rating, you'll also have to hit all of the stars on the level as well.

Most boxes are moveable, but some won't be, and the immobile boxes will always include the box that starts things off. Once you're happy with your box placement, tap the fuse attached to the starting box and watch the chain reaction, well, react in a chain. There's a certain satisfaction to watching a well-designed reaction do its thing and pick up all of the stars, and if you're shocked to find that your design has caused the chain reaction to fizzle out early or miss a star, you'll probably find that you'll be plenty motivated to try again and get your three-star rating.

As the game progresses, the puzzles naturally get more challenging, especially as new box types with different bloom patterns are slowly added to the mix. The puzzles are definitely for puzzle gamers who prefer to take their time and think a bit with each puzzle, which is reinforced by the lack of a timer on the puzzles. With four 'garden' collections of puzzles, you'll certainly get plenty of enjoyment out of this deceptively challenging puzzler. Wrap the whole thing in a bright and cheerful wrapper and you've got a puzzle game that's easy to recommend to fans of the genre.
