El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera is based off the Nickelodeon cartoon
series currently running on the network. There is actually a full episode of the
series on the game disc. It helps to give the player an idea of what to expect
in the game, right? No, the game actually has a much different feel compared to
that of the series.
The game allows you to take control of El Tigre or one of his friends and run
and jump your way through a level full of enemies, pitfalls and plenty of cheap
deaths. The game doesn't even have a life count. It's almost as if the
developers know that the player will be dying a bunch - oh, and you will!
Every level basically has you hopping from platform to platform while you
dodge hazards that get in your way. One hit from some enemies equals instant
death. Thankfully the game has several checkpoints spread throughout each level,
but this doesn't stop the frustration from constant deaths. When your character
respawns at a checkpoint there is no slight second of invincibility, so if you
move the wrong way then you could just die again then again if you're not
careful.
There is some occasional fighting on some platforms. Tap the O button for a
combo or hit the O button in the air for a ground pound attack. The hit
detection is a little off while attacking foes. Certain points in a level will
have you engage in a timed run through the level by touching an item - these
require you to collect taco items in order to increase your time while you speed
through a portion of the level. This often has you running through a level
extremely fast and dying plenty of times along the way while learning the
correct choice of movement per obstacle (timed jumps to avoid enemies and such).
