Godzilla has been known for the better part of this century as the giant lizard who, for some reason, simply hates Tokyo. He has crawled out of the ocean time and time again with only the aim of knocking over buildings, derailing trains and tearing through power lines. More recently he has taken to defending the Japanese city from monsters of all kinds, but the Godzilla most fans know and love has the exact same job as a wrecking ball, Galactus and the Tasmanian Devil- destruction for destruction's sake. It was about time that someone again attempted to give Godzilla a game that lives up to his legend, but sadly, Godzilla Unleashed: Double Smash for Nintendo DS is most likely not only the worst Godzilla game ever made, but the worst DS game of the year (and that includes Naruto: Path of the Ninja for Nintendo DS).

Godzilla Unleashed: Double Smash at least has an interesting idea behind it. You control Godzilla on the DS's lower screen and another monster on the upper screen with the option of switching between the two. I have to admit; it is kind of cool to see all my old favorites available. Titanosaurus, Mecha Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, Rodan… they are all here and all playable. The key word being 'playable'; this game is the exact opposite.

After selecting from an admittedly awesome lineup of the world's most famous monsters, you'll get to the game itself. Both of your monsters are situated permanently on the left side of either screen, plodding along without your assistance. You'll be attacked by various enemies, both human and not-so-human, but your only recourse will be a lame set of kicks and punches. Seriously. If you manage to plod through enough of these identical looking levels, you'll be rewarded with a lame boss fight and a couple of unlockable monsters. The trick is, you won't even want to play for long enough to get that far.

That may seem like a simplistic explanation, but the game is just that simple. The only actions you'll take are kicking, punching and switching between characters, both of which control the exact same way. This game will get old in less time than it will take you to get the plastic wrap off and the cartridge into your DS.

Aside from the two-button gameplay, there isn't much else to say about this game. The graphics look like they were lifted from an ok-looking SNES game, everything about the sound, including Godzilla's famous roar, is off and a pain to listen to… I really have nothing nice to say about this disaster of a video game. As bad as Naruto: Path of the Ninja was, at least I have only been a Naruto fan for a short while. I've been a Godzilla fan since my fifth birthday party, when a kid brought a big plastic Godzilla toy as a present. I still have that Godzilla toy and I'm as big a fan of the Japanese lizard now as I was all those years ago. Godzilla Unleashed: Double Smash for the Nintendo DS is a disgrace and literally no one should buy or even think about this game.

In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated: 2%.
