Sometimes I’m a little slow to get into the newest craze. For example, I was not a big fan of the survival horror games like Resident Evil when they first came out. Actually that is somewhat misleading. I don’t know if I was a fan or not because I didn’t play RE or other games of that genera at first. However when I did finally get around to it, I found that I really dug the whole zombie/living dead action. So now I’m playing DreamCatcher’s new game for the XBox called Curse: The Eye of Isis. Is it the type of games that nightmares are made of, or is it just a nightmare to play? Read on to find out…if you dare…

Curse would seem to have all sorts of things going for it at first, it’s almost like the developers had a checklist of things that should be in a horror game and proceeded to mark off the items one at a time. Unfortunately in following this list so precisely most, if not all, originality has been removed from the game. OK, that may not be totally true but it’s not far from it.

The story in Curse starts with the main character, Darien Dane, arriving at the Museum of Great Britain in London where a big exhibit for the museums newest collection, which includes the Eye of Isis statue, is about to open the following day. Legend has it that the Eye of Isis is cursed and I doubt if you would be getting any arguments from Darien about that. As luck would have it, right before our main man Darien arrives a mysterious thief breaks in to the museum to snatch the statue. That turns out to be a mistake as the “curse” of Isis is unleashed and all sorts of strange things start to happen at the museum. So naturally you decided to go into the museum and see what’s happening and to find your friend Victoria Sutton who happens to be in charge of the exhibit.

Now, if you have ever played a survival horror game like Resident Evil, Silent Hill or Fatal Frame you will feel right at home in Curse. Basically you roam around the different areas of game, starting with the museum then going through some sewers and finally ending up back in Egypt. You will find lots of documents lying around that will help you figure out what’s going on and what you might need to do next. This type of note reading is taken straight out of any number of other horror games. As you progress through the game you will notice a lot of dead people lying around. Some will leap up to attack you while other just stay in their prone position. I guess it makes it scary not knowing which ones will jump at you, but it never seemed that way to me.
