Working out at the gym.

If you try to get in shape by eating less and walking everywhere, then it will take you some time to lose the pounds. You’re better off spending some time in the gym instead. Even if you’re thin, you’ll want to visit the gym anyway as it is a great way to build muscle strength. Muscle strength will help you to better perform tasks that require lifting and physical exertion, and comes in handy in fights as you will hit harder. San Andreas will track your fat level and muscle strength separately, so it is possible for you to be fat and strong or thin and weak. Gyms will feature a number of possible workouts, stationary bikes, treadmills, barbells, and bench presses for example, and each will have its unique effect on your muscle/fat mix. Each gym will have its own unique set of equipment and instruction, so you’ll need to find one that will provide you with the kind of workout that you’re looking for. Furthermore, each city has its own distinct style of gym, each with its own look, feel, and clientele. The gym in Los Santos is grungy gym, a first-floor joint where gang members hang around and spar. Perhaps this would be a good place to work on your fighting skills, don’t you think? New combos and moves such as punching on the ground and punching while running can be learned in the gyms of Los Santos. In contrast, the gym in San Fierro is a serene dojo. The fighting techniques learned here will rely more on finesses than brute force. The gym in Las Venturas is a seedy, down-on-its-luck boxing facility with a ratty ring in the middle and numerous holes in the concrete floor. This is the perfect place to learn street fighting and some move that tend toward the dirty trick variety.

The new moves learned in the gyms are designed to take advantage of San Adreas’ new fighting system. You’ll now be able to target lock opponents while fighting and use a two button system to unleash combos and advanced moves. Working on your reaction time will yield rewards in terms of defense as you will now be able to block blows thrown by enemies.

While this preview has focused on eating and working out, San Adreas is more than a game of fat and muscle. The fat/muscle system is just one of the new features in store for Grand Theft Auto fans as Rockstar strives to provide for more freedom in San Andreas than in prior games in the series. We’ll bring you more previews of San Adreas’ new features as new details become available.
