Thanks to Still Sick for finding this out. The 'infinite lives' trick is a 
way to get a lot of lives. You can only do this in a Level with just one 
area. The two levels in this game that it will work in are Planet Express 
and the Market Square. I'll explain it for Market Square first.

Market Square has got two Sections, both are in the same area. The total 
amount of gold in this area is 50, so that's worth 2 extra lives. First get 
to Section 2. Don't collect too much gold in Section 1: if you go over 24, 
the trick won't work. Get a maximum of 24 gold before you enter Section 2. 
Now at the start of the second Section, some platforms come out of the lava, 
but ignore them. Instead, collect all money in the level to get 2 extra 
lives. Now jump in the lava. You will start in Section 2 again, collect 
all money to get more lives, and then die.

You can repeat this as long as you like. Each time you do it you will gain 1 
life. This way you can get an amazing amount of lives in a fairly short time. 
The trick also works in Planet Express, but it's way more difficult there. 
The money's more scattered, and dying is a tough job. Still, if you have the 
patience it's a nice preparation for the Sewers. Note that this trick has 
one negative side: you will get the worst rank possible if you do it a lot. 
Not that anyone cares...

In the part with the sinking pillars, jump on the first pillar. The pillars 
will now start sinking, starting with the one on your right. Ignore this one, 
and stay on the first platform until the one in front of you starts sinking. 
Now jump onto this pillar. This way, you’ll skip about 75% of the path.
