Much like in the original Dead Space, Extraction's overall sound design is
perfect. All of the voices fit each character and there are tons of extra
environmental sounds effects that add a real creepy atmosphere to the game. When
moving down a corridor, your character might suddenly hear a voice speaking to
the character. Dead Space Extraction is filled with moments such as this.
Both the Zapper or the Wii remote and nunchuk can be used to play Extraction.
The Wii remote can be used by itself by one player in a two player game. Both
main control setups have some awkward movements at times, such as having to
twist the gun sideways in order to switch to a weapon's secondary fire. During
the middle of a heated battle, I found it a bit troublesome at times to twist
the zapper sideways for secondary fire and point my gun off-screen then swing
the nunchuk to cut at enemies with my character's melee cutting blade.
The game has four modes of difficulty. Only normal and hard are unlocked from
the beginning then the other two harder difficulties are unlocked once the game
is finished. There are quite a few files and weapon upgrades hidden in the
background of each chapter. The game grades a player at the end of each chapter
based on the many factors such as amount of upgrades found, amount of files
found, accuracy, sliced appendages among many others.
Extraction offers a challenge mode that acts much like a survival mode. A
player fights against hordes of enemies in a stage and must compete for the best
high score through precise shooting and completing the stage. Other than the
unlockable challenge mode then game includes the downloadable comics from Xbox
LIVE and PSN that can be unlocked as the main story is completed.
Overall, Dead Space Extraction is a real good horror themed rail shooter to
pick up if you're a diehard Dead Space fan. For gamers that want a horror-based
shooter game that will last them for a while, I'd recommend a rental. The lack
of many unlockable extras for finding all items sort of makes collecting
everything feel less rewarding other than for completion. Long story short,
you're not likely to play through each chapter that much at all after completing
one, except to collect the missing unlockables that you might have left behind.
Dead Space Extraction's overall story, however, is really great for a Dead Space
fan and provides much Dead Space fan service for anyone that found the original
Dead Space appealing.
The Good:
+ Provides an engaging prequel story for the Dead Space franchise
+ Fun two-player rail shooter with plenty of Dead Space elements
+ Plenty of collectibles such as files and weapon upgrades hidden throughout
each chapter
+ Bonus comics for those that didn't download them on Xbox LIVE or PSN
+ Excellent sound design and voice acting
The Bad:
- For a Wii game, the graphics are good, but the character models lack detail
and appear blocky
- Not that much replay value outside of collecting every item in a chapter and
playing challenge mode for a better score
- The ending to the game felt rushed and didn't really wrap up the story well
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated:
80%. Dead Space: Extraction takes us back to the
events that transpired before Isaac and his team landed aboard the USG Ishimura
and it gives Dead Space fans plenty of backstory to make the overall Dead Space
storyline feel whole again.
