Once you select a game you're given a synopsis of the controls for that game.
If you owned a Genesis then you'll probably remember that it's controller had
six face buttons and a d-pad, which doesn't exactly match up to the 360's button
layout. However, the collection has done a good job of mapping the controls for
each game to the 360's controller. And it's not just the mapping that was
well-implemented; control in each game is implemented perfectly. The response is
perfect, as if each game was originally made to be played on the 360.
There's also a nice addition to each game that wasn't supported in the
original Genesis versions – you can save your progress at any point in any game.
Simply press Select and save your game, and you'll be able to resume from the
exact spot that you left off.
Games that supported multiplayer in their original versions do so again in
this collection, but unfortunately you can only play multiplayer on the same
console. Xbox Live support would certainly have been a great addition to this
collection. At least support for online leaderboards would have been nice.
I enjoyed playing through the games included in this collection, but I have
to warn you that some games have not aged well. I had a lot of good memories of
playing Gain Ground for example, but I can't say that I'll play it again after
seeing how poorly it has aged, and time has not been too kind to the Golden Axe
games which pale in comparison to today's action titles, including the mediocre
ones. However, plenty of games still hold up and are fun to play, and there's no
way to put a gameplay value on the nostalgic value a game may hold for someone.
If you owned a Genesis, the trip down memory lane alone will be enough to
warrant the purchase price of this collection. Those who grew up in the age of
the PlayStation or Xbox may find themselves wondering how anyone could have ever
found some of these games to be fun.
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated:
82%. The Genesis generation will appreciate this
nostalgia trip, but that trip may result in a few favorite memories losing some
of their luster.
