It's not all gunplay in Quantum of Solace. You can charge or jump an enemy
to attempt a hand-to-hand takedown. While the animations of Bond taking out an
enemy are cool, the mechanics of the fighting in the game are not. When a fight
begins an icon pops up telling you which face button to push on the controller.
Push the right button and you get to watch the animation of Bond taking the guy
out. Push the wrong one and you die. Not really interactive, and not really that
much fun.
There are a few action sequences in the game, but they are of the extended
press the magic button fight or escape the burning building by running through
it variety. There's nothing much in the way of puzzle-solving, and no driving
sequences whatsoever. You just get plenty of shoot-outs against a seemingly
endless stream of generic bad guys who all look the same. James Bond fans will
be disappointed; everyone else will just be bored.
The game fares better on the multiplayer side of things – it probably helps
that the game was built on the latest Call of Duty engine. In addition to the
standard modes you'd expect to find, the game provides three unique ones. Of
these three modes, one is team-based and the other two are one vs. many. The
team-based mode designates one player on each team as Bond. The goal in this
mode is to assassinate the other team's Bond while protecting your own. Golden
Gun mode arms one player with the powerful weapon for which the mode is named.
All other players work to kill the Golden Gun player, with the player getting
the kill earning the right to be the next Golden Gun bearer. Lastly there is
Bond Evasion. One player is Bond and can see all of the other players on the
radar. The other players have no radar and are eliminated from the game if
killed by the bond player. The game ends when Bond is killed or Bond kills all
other players in the game. There's definitely some fun to be had with the
multiplayer side of the game, but it's not compelling enough to warrant buying
the game just for its multiplayer action. There are better online shooters
available for you to spend your money on.
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated:
65%. The only thing that's really Bond about
Quantum of Solace, is the use of Daniel Craig's likeness in the game.
