The game is usually silent for the most part while creeping through dimly lit corridors but the sound can pick up during some sequences to give the player that immersive horror feel. The overall soundtrack is a mixture of rock and instrumental pieces - it's quite good! Character voices range from ok to simply annoying. Listening to Corey whine about his car caused made me to really hate that character. A lack of more interesting and fitting sound effects during combat is one of the reasons why combat is so dull in this game. When an enemy or the player attacks, the sound effects are very minimal during a hit, making you wonder if the hit actually connected.
The overall gameplay of Obscure feels mediocre mainly because of the combat system - combat feels so clunky. Moving around the environments and solving puzzles felt natural, but once an enemy surfaced, I was quickly reminded of my last frustrating battle.
Overall, Obscure is worth a look for survival horror fans hungry for a horror game, but the combat system may make the overall feel unpleasant at times. The first Obscure wasn't completely groundbreaking and the sequel isn't either. With a $20 price tag, it's worth a try for the well envisioned horror atmosphere it presents if nothing else. It lasts for a good 6 to 8 hours and there is no reason to play the game again except for the main story. The game seems to end suddenly but all is not over once the credits roll - there is actually quite a bit of gameplay left after that. From a story point of view, fans of the first game will most likely enjoy this one as well. I actually prefer this one when compared to the original Obscure.
The Good:
+ Pretty good horror atmosphere for some areas.
+ 2 player cooperative gameplay.
The Bad:
- Frustrating combat system.
- Some sound effects could have been much better, like during combat.
- Some characters are annoying.
Graphics: 7.5
Controls: 7.5
Sound: 7.0
Gameplay: 7.0
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated:
70%. The sequel to Obscure comes at us with some plausible scary environments and atmosphere but it is really not that much better than the first game.
