One very welcomed feature in this collection is the ability to save a checkpoint for most games. Once you lose (you have to lose, can't quit), then the game will give the option to save a checkpoint for that particular game allowing you to come back to that exact point when you return to the game at a later date. Many of the other developers should keep this feature in mind since it is very helpful when you simply get tired of a game for the moment and if you're like me then you will get tired of some of these old-school games eventually no matter how enjoyable they may be at times.
SNK Arcade Classics also has a goal system that gives you certain amount of goals that may be accomplished per game. An icon will appear after each goal is accomplished much like an Xbox 360 achievement. Earning a goal will unlock move lists, artwork, soundtracks, and videos for each game. These items can be viewed from the main menu at any time once they are unlocked. The only bad part about this goal system is that you will have to play some games that you might not want to play in order to get some unlockable artwork. For instance, most Samurai Showdown artwork is unlocked throughout other games including Baseball Stars 2, so if you're not that much of a sports fan then you better give in a bit if you want all the unlockables for your favorite fighting game.
In the end, SNK Arcade Classics has the same flaws and good qualities that many other arcade collections maintain. The best part I found about this collection is that no game is simply horrid - they all have some enjoyment to them, which really shows the mark of a good developer that we have come to expect from SNK over the years. SNK fans probably don't even need to read a review to justify the purchase of this game - they're all probably just looking over this review out of curiosity. With the $20 price tag this is easily a good pickup for any SNK fan or anyone that wants to perform a slight checkup on SNK in their early years.
The Good:
+ A decent variety of classic SNK games
+ Ability to save progress in most games
+ Goal system adds a bit of replay value to each game
The Bad:
- Though none of the games are truly awful, just about all of the games get repetitive quickly
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated:
70%. SNK Arcade Classics digs up some old memories of good times and a few bad times with its old SNK arcade titles but the end result is an overall good selection of games for the SNK fans out there.
