PAIN - Review

The goal in the game's main mode is to achieve as high a score as possible and also to chase down the fifty plus trophies available. Trophies are awarded for things like high scores and pulling off certain stunts in the game like grabbing the aforementioned giant bowling ball. The problem with all of this is that there is not enough variety here to keep you going for long. If you're the type of gamer who can sit there firing Jarvis in the same general spot twenty times in a row so that you can grab a subway car and win a trophy, then maybe it will hold you interest. If you simply want to cause destruction, things begin to feel repetitive once you've gone through the major interactions available. There are no new levels to unlock and explore, challenges, or anything of the like to keep your interest up.

The game has a few additional modes that all take place in the same city level as the regular game. One has you grabbing a mime out of midair and then trying to fling him into plates of glass, and the other has you trying to hit monkeys that are loose in the city. These modes are good for a couple of plays and then you'll have had enough of them. There is multiplayer support in the form of variants of HORSE and bowling and a game that has you competing to create the most damage with explosives, but none of these are playable online. In fact the game only supports two things online: leaderboards that simply list high scores and downloadable characters for the game. As of the time that I am writing this there are two characters available that can be used to replace Jarvis: Santa and the Christmas beauty Cookie. The characters don't change the game play in any way other than to give you a new skin, and so it's surprising that these skins will cost you a dollar apiece. There are hints that new levels may become available in the future, but I shudder to think what they will cost if the character skins are a dollar each.

And there you have it. A cool idea that's fun for a bit but that gets old too fast. Didn't I tell you that that's how the review would end?

In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated: 65%. PAIN feels more like a demo than a full game and it will hold your interest about as long as a demo would.
