Donkey Kong: Jungle Climber does have a few small faults. Everyone should already know that Donkey Kong games aren't exactly known for their stories, and this game doesn't do anything to shake that stereotype. The story is kind of dumb and the text is alternately corny and useless. If you need any more proof, one of the characters you are supposed to help out is a giant talking banana from the planet Plantaen. Stupidest. Pun. Ever. Also, you'll be on a quest for a Crystal Banana, and judging from its name, it is either a lame object to quest for or subversive marketing for the pornography industry. No matter which you choose to believe, the plot and characters are merely in the game to get the job done and keep the action moving. I guess it just bothers me that in the last quarter century, we've gone from saving princesses and gathering Triforce pieces to chasing a gag gift from every bridal shower ever thrown.
DK: Jungle Climber isn't particularly challenging either. You'll rarely lose a life and to make matters worse, the game can be beaten in an afternoon. When I say "beaten," I don't mean the last boss is taken care of; I mean you have collected every last item and unlocked all the mini games. Speaking of the mini games, most games that include them these days do so to extend a game's playtime. DK: Jungle Climber's mini games add all of ten minutes to the game and are just high score rehashes of tutorial modes.
Even with DK: Jungle Climber's faults, the game still delivers. The game is short, easy and has an ultra lame story, but Donkey Kong's latest adventure is not only extremely fun, it is a great way to make the days go by faster while you wait for The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass to comes out in October.
