The game’s Road to the Show mode is still its most enjoyable, but even this
mode has received a bit of tweaking. In 06 you could tell the game to sim
forward through games until your next plate appearance, but now in 07 you can
jump to your next play in the field too. It’s a little funny to take control of
your player knowing that the ball is coming to you on the next swing, but it
does let you get some of the experience of playing in the field without having
to trudge your way through every inning of every game. The biggest problem with
fielding in this mode is that even though you know that ball is coming to you
it’s very hard to see it, especially so because this mode uses a behind-the-back
camera view rather than the traditional behind-the-plate view. Pop-ups and flies
are OK because you can make your way to the circle that marks the ball’s
eventual landing spot, but good luck trying to get a bead on a grounder or
liner, especially if you’re in the outfield. Each time you come to bat or face a
batter as a pitcher, your coach will give you a goal such as “get on base” or
“get the batter to ground into a double play”. Meet these goals and your
standing with the team will improve and you’ll earn points that can be spent to
improve your player’s stats. The goals are a cool feature, but as a hitter
you’ll see “get a hit” far too often. Isn’t getting a hit what it’s all about
anyway? And aren’t good players doomed to miss this goal two out of three times?
MLB 07 adds even more to the series’ traditionally strong network support. In
addition to Infrastructure and Ad Hoc games and leagues, you can also pick up
roster updates and MLB news. Perhaps the coolest thing here though is the
real-time gamecast support that lets you follow games in progress. Talk about a
baseball fan’s dream feature.
If you enjoyed MLB 06 you’re sure to like MLB 07, but you’ll need to decide
if the minor updates to the game are worth it to you to warrant a purchase. If
you’re looking for your first baseball game for your PSP, then MLB 07 is an
excellent choice.
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated:
91%. MLB 07: The Show takes the 06 version and
makes it even better.
