The game looks pretty good and even runs in 1080p, but even in HD at this
resolution the results are not as good as you probably expect them to be. The
reflections on the court and the player animations all look good, but there’s a
subtle blockiness or jagged look to things that should be there at 1080p. The
NCAA prevents the game from using player likenesses, but the player models are
close enough to the real players that you’ll generally be able to tell who is
who on the marquee teams if you’re familiar with them.
As for gameplay modes, College Hoops 2K7 will let you instantly jump into a
rivalry game controlling your favorite school or let you match up any two
schools in the country. If you’re looking for a deeper experience, the game
provides two franchise modes that are full-featured and deep. Career mode puts
you in the role of a coach just starting out, so you’ll have to select from a
small set of offers from smaller schools or programs in need of rebuilding.
Prove yourself at your first school and you’ll start to draw the attention of
bigger schools, which will hopefully eventually lead to you landing a job
running the program of a top-tier school. The open mode is more traditional in
that you can select from any NCAA school and take over right away. In addition
to playing games, you’ll be able to set your team’s schedule, guide the team
through its initial practices, select which players to redshirt, and recruit
players to fill your roster next year. You can also keep track of the college
basketball season’s progress through the game’s college hoops show hosted by
Greg Gumbel and Clark Kellogg. This show feature some of the worst lip-synching
to appear in a game in a while, but other than that is real treat for basketball
fans. There are also special episodes of the show such as preseason preview and
NCAA Tournament selection shows. Multiplayer support is provided both on the
console with up to six players or online in single games, tournaments, or even
leagues.
