NASCAR 07 comes with plenty of racing modes to give you motivation to drive
in circles for hours on end. You can create a single race in which you have full
control over the race settings such as the track, number of laps, and race
rules. If you’d rather be in it for the long haul, you can begin a new career as
a professional driver. When I say “the long haul” I mean it – you’ll have to
make your way through a couple of minor circuits before you’re given the chance
to go for the Nextel Cup. In addition to giving you plenty of races to complete,
the career mode throws in other aspects of a NASCAR career such as managing
merchandise and working with an agent. None of these extras is really that deep
and you spend far more time racing than doing anything else, but NASCAR fans are
sure to enjoy the extra touches in this mode. If you’d rather not work your way
up all the way from the bottom, you can play the game’s Race for the Cup mode
which has you competing in just the races that count for the cup standings and
championship.
The game also includes a fun little mode known as the Dodge Challenge that is
appealing to both fans of NASCAR and racing novices. This mode includes a series
of race situations drawn from the 2005 season and challenges you to recreate a
memorable moment or to change the real-life outcome. Each of these opens with an
interview with the driver you’ll be racing as in which he sets up the situation
and describes what happened in real life. You are then put behind the wheel and
it’s up to you to repeat or change history. NASCAR fans will love reliving the
highlights of last year while others will learn a lot about driving as they
complete the challenges. It is also a great mode for those times when you’d like
to get a little racing in even though you don’t have a lot of time.
Lastly there is an online racing mode, but this is pretty basic and there’s
not a whole lot to say about it. Only four players can compete at a time
although the field can be rounded out with computer controlled racers.
Unfortunately the de facto strategy seems to be to bump your opponent out of the
race.
There’s plenty of enjoyable action to be had in NASCAR 07 for the racing fan.
However, if you’re new to racing games or short on patience, you probably want
to look elsewhere for your racing action.
