The folks from Gran Turismo have been putting out 1st quality racing games as far as graphics, but they stumble when it comes to the racing realism. The main beef I have with the car games are some of the absurd qualifications required to achieve gold medal status in the license section. Now, Gran Turismo turns to motorcycle racing. I was pleasantly surprised by the license section here. Much more realisitc. Then, I started racing, and came upon the ridiculous 10 second penalty for touching even an iota of dirt off the track or going up on the curbing. It ain't like that in real life, folks. I know. I roadraced for 6 years. When you straighten out a chicane, you don't always do it pretty. But unless you fall down, no harm, no foul. The second part of the ridiculous 10 second penalty is touching another rider. I could maybe see this if they had programmed it to discourage rough riding on your part. But I can't count how many times a qualifying run has been screwed or a race lost, when another rider comes over and bumps you! Why isn't he penalized? This is completely bogus, as well as extremely irritating. Also, other riders are free to run into the back of you, bump you off line, often causing you to incur the infuriating 10 second penalty, leading to a race loss. In 2 words: IT SUCKS!!! Lastly, pre-race practice should be available for each and every race, not just the championship series. As it is now, you have to start a race, then possibly discover your gearing is off, tire choice is wrong, brakes need adjusting, etc., etc. That's what practice is for, and it's omission is another mark against their claim to being "The" racing simulator. Will they ever get it right? I'm not holding my breath. |
