There’s a fair amount of flexibility in the combat, but in practice you’ll be
mashing the buttons as enemy after enemy attackes with very little room for any
semblance of strategy or tactics. Is it fun? For action-RPG fans it is, but a
lot of gamers will feel the repetition setting in and find it hard to play the
game for long stretches at a time. On the other hand, if you use your PSP to get
in little snippets of gameplay while on the go this game fits the bill nicely.
You can jump in, slay a bunch of monsters, and then get back to your real life
without any trouble.
The overall game is a pretty linear affair and there’s never really any
confusion as to where to go and what to do next. In case there is (which can
occur after putting your PSP down for a bit), the game keeps a record of your
current quest and provides a map to let you know where you are in the grand
scheme of things. The map also has a nice feature in that you can select any
location that you’ve already visited and be instantly transported there. This is
a big help when you complete a quest and need to quickly return to the character
who gave it to you. The game also will let you save anywhere which is a really
nice feature. Too many PSP games rely on the standby mode as a default save
mechanism which doesn’t do you much good when you want to switch games but have
to play to a save point before you do.
The Warrior’s Code also includes support for multiplayer games in both Ad Hoc
and Infrastructure modes. Two players can explore the game in co-op mode, and
you can have up to four compete in the special multiplayer modes. The
multiplayer modes are the kinds more typically found in shooters, with
deathmatch and capture the flag among them. The multiplayer gaming is enjoyable,
but things can be unbalanced if there is too great a level disparity between the
players.
While hard-core RPG gamers may scoff at the game’s hack and slash approach,
it plays well for those looking for an action-RPG that works well as a portable
game. It’s the kind of game that you’ll want in your collection when you hit the
road as it is easy to play in short sessions and to jump back into between
games.
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated:
80%. The Warrior’s Code makes for some fun hack and slash gameplay on the
go.
