| Venom has a bit of an attitude problem. |
There is the main story and also what seems like side quests but are actually
needed to progress through the game. These side quests are things like save the
little old lady from purse snatchers or chase someone through the city and then
fight them. The problem is that they do not vary a whole lot and come across
feeling like nothing more than extra tasks thrown in to make the game appear
longer than it actually is when you focus on just the main story. There are also
times where you will race Johnny Storm around the city. Until you get used to
the web swinging mechanics prepare to be left behind often. Speaking of which of
course since you are Spider-man you will want to do what a spider does and swing
around the city. You have two different ways to cruise around by either doing a
web zip, which is useful to move along a straight line, or the web swing where
you shot your web to a building and then...well, swing. Sounds simple but it
does take a little while to get comfortable with it. You can also boost yourself
along and climb up the web. Of course you can crawl along walls and do some cool
jumps.
Speaking of jumps, you know who else can jump? Venom, that's who and in USM
you also get to play as him. Where Spider-Man is all grace and acrobatic Venom
is all brute strength. Spidey can glide up a wall and not leave a trace. Venom
will claw his way up a wall and leave damage marks all along the way. And boy
can this guy jump. He must have taken the “jump over buildings in a single
bound” thing to heart. Venom jumps are hard to control at first because you
can't aways judge where you're going to land. Oh, and Venom needs to eat people
to keep the suit happy. Yea, you're not likely to find a suit like that at
Brooks Brothers. It is interesting to play between Venom and Spider-Man where
one is all fury and force and the other is the exact opposite. You do not get
when you get to play as Venom, but after beating the game you will then be able
to roam around the city freely and make life miserable for those poor city
dwellers.
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated:
77%. Ultimate Spider-Man does its best to bring a comic book to life
and does a good job with the presentation. Its weakness is that the story is way
too short and parts are repetitive.
