The venerable Gauntlet series is in for an update with Seven Sorrows.
To find out what's in store for the latest game in the series, we asked a few
questions of the game's associate producer, Nate Birkholz.
GT: What's the storyline in Seven Sorrows and what role do players
play in that story?
NB: The four immortal heroes--Wizard, Valkyrie, Elf, and Warrior—long
served the Emperor. But the Emperor grew jealous of them and conspired with his
sorcerous advisers to imprison them and steal their immortality. And then,
betrayed by his sorcerers, he came to regret imprisoning the heroes and giving
power to his six advisors. Haunted by these seven sorrows, the Emperor sets the
Heroes free and begs them to defeat the sorcerers and undo the damage he has
done. The players will then set forth to defeat the sorcerers and their minions,
traveling across a troubled world and into the darkest depths of a magical
volcano.
GT: In the past, Gauntlet has always been more of an arcade action
game than anything else. Will Seven Sorrows stick to this format or are there
changes in store for the Gauntlet series?
NB: We wanted to keep the original, action-arcade orientation of the
game that has led to its success over the years, while taking time to bring some
variety and a more modern gameplay style to the game. Previous Gauntlet games
have been all about ranged attacks, while Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows is more about
action melee combat, with combos, special attacks, and lots of reasons to use
all the buttons on the controller instead of hitting one button over and over
again.
GT: Will the famous monster generators be back?
NB: In spades. Gauntlet has always been about fighting the generators,
and that remains a unique and signature gameplay vision.
GT: What about everyone's friend, Death? Will he be featured in Seven
Sorrows?
NB: The heroes of Gauntlet are immortals, and their ancient and
natural enemy is Death himself. Death will definitely be in Gauntlet: Seven
Sorrows, forever trying to defeat the heroes’ immortal powers.
