Saint’s Row will also give players a lot of freedom in crafting their
persona. Shops will give you access to a large variety of clothing and
accessories, letting you take on the look of a Mafioso or a hip-hop gangsta. The
Xbox 360’s power is put to full use here as you’ll be able to zoom in on the
clothing to actually check out the textures and stitching of each piece of
clothing. The clothing can be layered as well, so you can select your outfit
from your underwear out to your coat. You’ll also be able to control the look of
your character, including facial features and skin tone. There will even be
plastic surgeons in the game that will help you change the way you look to help
take a little of the heat off of your back. And then there are the cars. With 80
or so vehicles you’d think that game had plenty of variety in that department,
but Saint’s Row takes things even further. You’ll be able to pimp out your ride
to give yourself a truly custom set of wheels.
Another game element demonstrated at the show was the “dial a homie” feature.
As you play through the game you’ll build a contact list of gang members that
you can ring up on your cell phone. Give one a call and he or she will show up
to give you some back-up when you need it. Your homie will always show up armed
and will give you extra firepower whether on foot or behind the wheel. You can
even borrow your homie’s car for the job.
Saint’s Row will also feature an online component that will allow players to
compete on Xbox Live. Up to twelve players can compete in one of the game’s
seven online modes, each of which will be designed to take advantage of the
world of Saint’s Row. For example, one game will start all players out with a
car that they must pimp out to a certain level. Of course they’ll have to earn
the money to do so while protecting their car from the other players.
Saint’s Row looks pretty impressive at this stage in its development and it
certainly is a title to keep your eye on as we transition ourselves to the next
generation of consoles and games.
