| The Fantastic 4 works as a team. |
There also exists an imbalance within your team, with Mr. Fantastic and Thing
being pretty powerful and the Invisible Woman and Human Torch best left to AI
control when possible. The Invisible Woman’s invisibility and stealth attacks
don’t do much good in a room stuffed with enemies and it’s hard to align her
properly to execute the stealth kill anyway. The Human Torch is rendered
ineffective by the game’s spotty controls as his fire attacks depend on your
being able to actually aim them at something.
You’ll spend most of your time bashing skulls, but there are a few other minor
aspects to the game. Throughout the levels you’ll find special color-coded
Fantastic 4 icons that indicated a context sensitive action is available. Moving
the member of the team who corresponds to the icon’s color will initiate a mini
game of sorts using that team member’s specialized skills. The Human Torch may
be needed to weld metal, or Mr. Fantastic to hack a computer terminal, for
example. The mini games usually involve timed button tapping and are all short
and simple to the point where they’re not really necessary and feel more like a
content filler.
After playing through the game’s storyline you have the option of playing the
game in Arena mode. This mode sends waves of attackers at you and challenges you
to defeat them all. Since combat in the game is a simple button-mashing
free-for-all you can probably imagine that the Arena mode gets old fast.
However, there is one exciting feature to be found in this mode. If you save
your progress in Arena mode it will wipe out your campaign progress. Even though
you unlock new Arena modes in the story mode, they need to have separate save
slots. The game doesn’t bother mentioning that to you though. Isn’t that cool?
There’s not much more to say about the game because frankly there’s not that
much more too it. Fantastic 4 is best left to diehard fans of the movie or
comic. There are better superhero brawlers out there for everyone else.
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated:
60%. This not so fantastic game is best left to true fans of the
Fantastic 4.
