Would you classify Deadlocked as more of an action game than previous
Ratchet & Clank games or does it still stick to its platformer roots?
Troy Dunniway, Senior Lead Designer: Ratchet: Deadlock has much more action
and excitement than ever before. Fans who like shooters will love the
intensity of the action this time, along with the new weapons and weapon mods.
Previous fans will still enjoy the humor, fun and polished gameplay that
Ratchet Deadlock has to offer.
Please tell us a bit about the game’s mission-based campaign. How many
missions are there and how many need to be completed to beat the game?
James Messina, Designer: Ratchet: Deadlocked was designed with a mission-based
campaign in order for it to feel more like a game show. It also helps players
by providing many optional missions that can be completed instead of just
grinding against one mission that they are finding a bit too hard at the
moment. Players will fight through 58 story-based missions, all of which have
to be completed in order to progress through the game. There are also 30 Dread
Missions that the player will encounter throughout the campaign. These do not
all have to be completed, but the player must accumulate a certain amount of
Dread Points by completing these missions before he or she can advance to the
next level.
What are some of the new weapons appearing in the game?
Stephen Lim, Gameplay Programmer: The combat system in Ratchet: Deadlocked is
all about the new weapons modification system. Of course, we've also added
some new surprises for players to look forward to, like the Harbinger, which
paints the ground with targets that call in a crushing air strike. Even oldies
like the Mine Launcher have been modified, allowing you to hold your next mine
in a small forcefield outside the gun. Charge-boot your way into a crowded
area with this gun and watch everything explode on contact!
How many omega mods will be available?
Lim: Carrying on in the tradition of Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando and
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, weapons deal a lot more damage as they level
up. In Ratchet: Deadlocked, they also gain Alpha mods, which can increase your
firing rate, increase your ammo capacity, give you soft-locking to help you
aim, or any of a number of additional mods.
Ratchet will also be able to purchase and add Omega mods that actually change
what happens once your projectile hits an enemy. Grenades can explode to
release blobs of searing Napalm that can seal off a busy tunnel; rockets can
explode and morph a whole area of targets into fuzzy farm animals; Holoshields
can freeze any quick-running enemies in their tracks that run through them;
and the Sniper Rifle can destroy a whole collection of enemies in the distance
by adding an area-of-effect Shock mod. These are some of my favorite combos,
but anyone else can take all these mods and switch them around between the
different weapons to customize their experience. We've left it up to the
players to discover the most devastating combinations. In total, there will be
8 Omega mods to look forward to.
