You’ll spend the majority of the game slugging your way through dungeons. There are a variety of monsters residing in these dungeons, but they all pretty much have the same attack strategy which is to charge directly at you and mob you. While this kind of toe to toe slugfest can be fun in short doses, this lack of variety makes longer play sessions feel pretty repetitive.

You'll spend most of your time in dungeons.

The game uses a random dungeon generator to try and add a little variety to the game, but this makes them feel like random hodgepodges of rooms rather than anything built with a practical purpose. The random generator also seems to have a bit of a problem with the monster distribution, as you can go for several rooms without encountering anything only to be mobbed by a mix of creatures in the next. It’s kind of odd to walk into a room filled to capacity with skeletons and spiders hanging out together waiting for an interloper to stumble by.

There’s plenty of loot to finding the game in the form of weapons and armor. Most of the weapons and armor are tied to a single class, though, so the percentage of items that are actually usable is smaller. Weapons and armor can be further augmented with ruins and crystals you’ll find during adventures. The abundance of loot will require you to spend a lot of time managing your inventory, looking for which items to keep and drop. The game also has a weird quirk in that the graphics for your inventory items are drawn one at a time as the game accesses the disk to retrieve the graphics one by one. With as much time as you’ll have to spend with your inventory, this delay can certainly add up.

Untold Legends is not a bad game at all, but it leaves you feeling that it could have been more. If you’re looking for some quick hack and slash dungeon crawling on the go, it certainly will satisfy your need. RPG fans will more than likely find it disappointing, though, as the RPG side of the game is minimalist and lacking in depth. Your enjoyment of Untold Legends will be directly related to what you want to get out of the game.

In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated: 71%.  If you want simple hack and slash action, Untold Legends certainly delivers on that point.
