As you play the game, all of your reckless behavior will earn you “smash
points”. Smash points are a currency of sorts that can be spent to buy new moves
for the Hulk. The moves cover the spectrum from new combos to enhancements to
current moves. There are a lot of moves to purchase and the game is not stingy
with the smash points, so you’ll be building up your moves from early on and
will just keep on getting more powerful from there. Of course all of the new
moves lead to more destruction, which gives you more smash points, and so goes
the cycle of violence.

There’s not much to the game’s story – bad government agents try to take down
big green guy who just wants to be left alone. Luckily the missions themselves
are more interesting even if their context is a bit iffy. As you can probably
guess, they are all heavy on the destruction but you can expect a variety of
objectives including escorts, retrievals, boss fights, and, yes, smashing
everything in sight. As you progress through the story missions you’ll find that
the difficulty ramps up pretty quickly. Enemies will often gang up on you in the
latter stages of a mission, leaving your poor Hulk to die in a barrage of
missiles and tank fire just when you thought that you were within reach of the
objective.
The side missions include your standard time trials and destruction derbies,
but also included are mini games that provide both fun and variety. Especially
enjoyable are the sports-themed games that have you using a radio antenna as a
baseball bat to see how far you can hit soldiers dropping out of a helicopter or
kicking enemies through a field goal.
If there’s one thing that bothered me about the game it would have to be the
fact that the Hulk is not a very heroic superhero, at least not in the game.
It’s bad enough to spend the game killing American soldiers, but running through
the streets killing cops, smashing ambulances, and crushing civilians just
doesn’t feel right. No wonder everyone is out to kill the Hulk…
Ultimate Destruction shows that you can have superhero games that are fun to
play. The game does an excellent job of not only providing an enjoyable gameplay
experience, but also of capturing the spirit of the Hulk. To VU Games I say,
“Excelsior!”
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated:
90%. It may not be easy being green,
but it’s easy to have a blast playing as the Hulk in Ultimate Destruction.
