| A combo begins... |
As mentioned above, you can smash just about anything you see in the game’s
levels. Posts, walls, furniture, and even the floors of buildings can be laid to
waste. If you’re concerned that you’re busy destroying what you’re trying to
save, the game lays such concerns to rest because the areas you’re destroying
have been “defiled” by the demons and need rebuilding anyway. So feel free to
smash away guilt free – as if that would stop you anyway. At first this is a
pretty cool feature of the game, but as the game marches on it can begin to feel
repetitive. I guess smashing loses a bit of its appeal when you’re free (and
encouraged) to smash everything and anything you see…
Defeating enemies will earn experience for the character that you are playing,
and you’ll also be able to come across money that can be spent for upgrades. In
this way the game has a bit of an RPG aspect in that your characters will
increase in power and earn new spell attacks as the game progresses. In fact,
some levels can be quite demanding and you’ll find yourself revisiting completed
missions in order to pump up your characters’ stats in order to survive.
The developers – or more specifically, the artists – of Otogi 2 deserve a lot of
credit for creating some of the most unusual and visually appealing levels
you’ll ever find in a game. The words “surreal”, “dream-like”, and “imaginative”
do not do justice to a game that really must be seen for yourself. It’s a shame
that the same level of imagination did not go into the actual gameplay, and as a
result the game will appeal to only the portion of the action gaming crowd that
is looking for a game with a look all of its own.
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated:
80%. If you’re into dreamy and surreal landscapes, then you’ll be into
Otogi 2.
