Serious Sam is a game with a serious sense of humor, so be prepared for a lot of
one-liners from Sam and some inside jokes scattered among the levels. As
is always the case with wisecracking heroes, some jokes are quite humorous while
others fall completely flat. Whether or not you will find this aspect of
the game enjoyable or annoying depends on your sense of humor.

Serious Sam does not disappoint in the action department, but does come up a bit
short when it comes to graphics. The PC versions of the game featured
amazing graphics, with colorful environments and realistic textures. In
fact, its graphics engine far surpassed those of many "full priced" games.
Unfortunately, the graphics quality did not carry over to the Xbox version of
the game. The game environments appear a bit fuzzy, as if they are
slightly out of focus, the quality of the textures is not too good and appears
blocky on close inspection, and the character models look fine from a distance
but not so from up close. I can only assume it was necessary to reduce the
quality of the graphics in order to keep things running smoothly when a large
number of enemies are on screen. Even if this is the case, you can still
expect a few frame drops when the action gets particularly heavy. As a
result of all this, Serious Sam's graphics don't hold up against those of the
top games for the system.
Serious Sam can be a lot of fun for those who prefer their action games heavy
on the action. It also provides some pretty darn good multiplayer mayhem
for when you have your friends over (there is no support for Xbox Live).
The downside to all of this is that it can begin to feel repetitive after a
while. Fend off a few waves of attackers, move to a new area, repeat.
Also, if you prefer your games to have more than a cursory storyline and that
reward tactical skills more than button mashing, you might want to rent it first
to see if Serious Sam is your cup of tea.
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated:
79%. Fast and frantic action for the
arcade shooter fan, but light on story and strategy. Its graphics are a
step down from those of its PC-based predecessors.
