The humor does not fare much better than the lackluster stripper videos.
It's not that it's ribald or "adult", it's just that it's very juvenile and for
the most part completely devoid of humor. The jokes are all variations on
those that you probably first heard in your junior high locker room, and feature
plenty of double entendres that even James Bond would hesitate to use. To
give you an idea of what passes for humor in this game, various vendors
appearing in the levels sell "hot salty nut sacks", "yellow snow cones", and
"giant wieners". I've got nothing against adult humor, it's just that I'd
prefer it to be clever ... and funny. Dave Mirra removed his name from the
game during its development, probably more so for all of the lame attempts at
humor than the nudity.
The game's graphics are a mix of average and less than so. The levels
look good enough, with good textures and a lot of details. The game's
characters are sub-par, though, with jerky movements and blurry, poorly-detailed
textures. With the power under the Xbox's hood, it is disappointing to see such
poor character models. A game that makes you work so hard to earn the
right to use a topless rider should at least make her look good.
The game does feature a great soundtrack, and will also let you play your own
music off of the Xbox's hard disk. The sound effects are minimal, and not
all that realistic to boot. Just listen to the music, which includes
artists such as Sublime and Green Day, and you won't notice the lack of other
sounds.
In addition to the regular levels, BMX XXX provides two competition levels in
which you compete with other riders for the top score by performing tricks in
skate parks. There are also three multiplayer modes: skillz, paintball,
and strip challenge. Skillz is a competition for highest score in a two
minute run, paintball challenges one player to collect all of the level's
boomboxes before being nailed by the other player, and in strip challenge your
opponent loses an article of clothing each time you pull off a new record trick.
In spite of its flaws, BMX XXX can be fun, especially when starting out on a
new level. It's fun to explore the new level and find all of the trick
features. However, once completing all of the easy challenges, the levels
can lose their appeal and leave you wishing you could just play the next level.
The multiplayer mode extends the game's life, but overall once the novelty of
the adult language and humor wear off, you may find that there is not enough
here to hold your interest long term.
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated:
62%. The gameplay and adult content both fail to deliver, leaving the
game thoroughly Mirra'd in mediocrity.
