| Boom! |
You won't have to stay on your feet through the whole single player campaign
- you'll have the opportunity to use vehicles as well. If you played Red
Faction, you'll recognize the game's mini-sub. It is the only vehicle
you'll have the opportunity to drive; you'll serve as gunner on an aircraft and
tank. Though you are just along for the ride, the gunner levels are quite
a bit of fun. When you are the gunner on the aircraft you will pass by
high-rise buildings filled with enemies. You'll blow out windows and
chew-up desks and cubicles as enemies try to race down the corridors to try and
get an open shot at you. Good stuff.
While on the subject of blowing things up, the game's Geo Mod engine
definitely deserves mention. This feature lets you destroy most of the
objects appearing in the game. Don't like that statue of Sopot? Blow
its head off. Looking for a shortcut? Blow a hole in the wall and
crawl into the next room. While the game doesn't give you free reign to go
anywhere simply by blowing out walls, it is a cool feature that can lead to
secret areas or shortcuts. It also gives you the illusion that the game is not quite as
linear as it really is.
Once you finish the single player campaign (and you'll do it far too soon as
the campaign is on the short side) you can try your hand at the multiplayer
game. Up to four players can compete on the numerous maps and game types
supported. In addition to the death match and capture the flag games,
there is a bag man game in which players gain points for holding the "bag".
There are also a few other modes that can be unlocked as you progress through
the single player campaign. Unfortunately the game does not support online
play, but you can play against computer-controlled bots. You can customize
some of the bot behaviors, like how likely they are to camp (or wait for you to
come by) versus their tendency to go out and seek other players. You'll
definitely want to adjust the bots' agility level, as by default they move
inhumanly fast. The multiplayer game can be enjoyable, but it doesn't
match the fun factor of the single player game.
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated:
90%. Action game fans should run out and enlist with the Red Faction.
The single-player campaign is a blast, but will leave you wishing that it was
longer.
