"1. Here is a play calling tip that I observed from watching many real NFL
games. If you get into a "2nd and short" situation, take the opportunity and air
it out deep. I noticed Charlie Weis, offensive coordinator for the N.E. Patriots
doing this and it makes perfect sense.
If you don't complete the pass, you can always go for the easy first down on
"3rd and short". Also, this will definitely "stretch the defense" by making them
worry about going into nickel or dime which only helps your running game. (You
may not want to do this on every "2nd and short" so as not to give your strategy
away, so mix it up!)
2. In any situation in which you need 3-5 yards for the first down, go to the
single-back formation with 4 wide receivers. Many times you will get the defense
in some type of 4-3 or nickel. If this is the case, your "L" or "X" receiver
(sometimes both) will be open. Then all you do is a quick 'snap and fire" to the
open receiver for a 3-5 yard gain depending on your personnel.
3. Try to attack ALL parts of the field. Do not just keep using your favorite
plays over and over. You will be way too predictable. Mike Shanahan of the
Broncos is of the school that scripts the first 10- 20 plays. This let's them
see what's working and makes the highly UN-predictable to the defense.
If you run up the gut right, throw deep left on the next play. If you sweep
right with Edgerrin James on one play, throw him a screen pass left, behind the
line of scrimmage, on the next play. Attack every part of the field in a
rotating pattern. Occasionally, run the exact same play. Occasionally, run a
reverse or half-back pass just to keep your opponent guessing!" - wesleyan43062
