Gaming News - November 2002
Washington, DC (November 26, 2002) - A new patch was released today
for America's Army: Operations. See below for details.
From America's Army:
The update includes the new River Basin map, a new scoring system, a 'Report
In' feature, and multiple 'tweaks' and fixes to existing gameplay.
River Basin Map
The River Basin mission takes place in the local training area of an Army Post
in the Continental United States (CONUS). The surrounding forest lowlands and
rolling hills are rutted and heavily eroded. Populated with numerous MOUT
(Military Operations Urban Terrain) structures, the area offers ample cover and
concealment. A Field Training Exercise (FTX) using the Multiple Integrated
Laser Engagement System (MILES) to replicate engagements is taking place. The
purpose of this exercise is for infantry squads to hone their ability to
immediately react to an enemy attack in the logistical area of the battalion.
One squad will participate as an Opposing Force (OPFOR) that has just seized
control of key logistic supply points. The U.S. squad must retake or deny the
use of the captured supplies by the Opposing Force.
New Scoring System
The player's score is now the aggregate sum of all other columns on the
scoreboard, minus ROE (Rules of Engagement)
points. All player scores will count as experience points towards gaining levels
of Honor, with the exception of negative KIA and LEADER values, which will be
discarded. The point structure for scoring is broken down as follows:
GOALS -- Each Goal is typically worth 10-50 points,
depending on the map being played. Goals will be balanced
across all maps to achieve a proper distribution of points
between the Assaulting and Defending teams (i.e., Goal
Points for Defense may be different than Goal Points for
Assault, from map to map). The ways in which a player may
earn Goal points are as follows:
- Triggering an Objective (Goal points are awarded to an
individual who triggers an objective.)
- Assisting in the triggering of an Objective (Goal points
are awarded to an individual who is in the vicinity of an
objective while another player is triggering it.)
- Defending an Objective (Goal points are awarded for
dispatching an enemy while in the vicinity of an active
objective.)
- Team Win (Goal points are awarded to each member of the
winning team at the end of the round.)
- Survival Bonus (Additional points are awarded to each
living member of the winning team at the end of the round.)
LEADER -- Extra points are awarded to players who take on
leadership roles in the game. These players may earn points
for the following:
Squad Leader
20 points for starting as the Squad Leader and winning the round.
10 points for each surviving team member at the end of the winning round.
-10 points for starting as the Squad Leader and losing the round.
0 points for being Field Promoted to Squad Leader.
10 points for each surviving team member at the end of the
winning round if Field Promoted to Squad Leader.
Fire Team Leader
10 points for starting as FTL and winning the round.
10 points for each surviving team member at the end of the winning round.
-5 points for starting as FTL and losing the round.
0 points for being Field Promoted to FTL.
5 points for each surviving team member at the end of the
winning round if Field Promoted to FTL.
ENEMY
10 points will be added to the player's score each time he dispatches a member
of the Opfor.
KIA
10 points will be subtracted from the player's score each time he is killed in
action.
ROE (Rules of Engagement)
One point will be subtracted from the player's score for every point of ROE
earned.
Other New Features Include:
Report In Feature: In the upper-right of the screen, the
player's current location will be printed at all times. If
asked to Report-In by a team leader, the player can hit a
key and this location will be transmitted to the rest of
the team. This will allow all players to more easily
communicate amongst each other, and act as a more cohesive unit.
Binoculars: Team Leaders will now be issued binoculars to better assess the
battlefield from a distance.
Iron Sights: Players will now be able to move with the iron sights raised.
Honor: Along with the new scoring system, the Honor System
has been improved and should now present a better, more
balanced depiction of player behavior and performance.
News: Players will now be able to get the latest
America's Army news on the login screen.
Plus, lots of tweaks and bug fixes including:
- Scoreboard now displaying teams correctly

instances of that account being kicked (authorized servers only)
