Gaming News - June 2003

(June 23, 2003) - Wizards of the Coast today announced that to celebrate the game's one year anniversary they are releasing a special new avatar.

From Wizards of the Coast:

It’s been just a year since Magic: The Gathering® Online came onto the scene, paving the way for a new genre of online games – electronic trading card games. In 12 short months, Magic® Online has drawn more than 100,000 registered players and we’ve seen 40 million digital Magic cards traded by players building their online decks for battle. Each month in Magic Online, numerous game lobbies for all levels of players offer more than 12,000 tournaments.

On June 24, Wizards of the Coast will officially mark the first anniversary of Magic Online by offering players a special avatar – the Two-Headed Giant of Foriys.

Players logging on to Magic Online between 12:01 a.m.-11:59 p.m. PDT on June 24 will be awarded the special avatar FREE. (Players must log on – and not already be playing – any time after midnight on June 24, in order for the game to register the log-on.) The game masters at Wizards will keep track of players who log on any time on June 24 and add the avatar to those players’ accounts sometime after June 25. Players will then be able to access the new, limited edition avatar in the Settings screen and use it in game.

What’s so special about the Two-Headed Giant avatar?

The Two-Headed Giant of Foriys was selected by players, who got to cast their vote for one of 16 possible avatars earlier this year. Close to 15,000 total votes were cast and the Two-Headed Giant emerged as the winner!

Coming Soon – Magic Online 2.0

Wizards will re-launch Magic Online on July 28, with loads of new features for new and experienced players. The launch of Magic Online 2.0 will coincide with the release of the Magic: The Gathering Eighth Edition core set, marking the first simultaneous release of Magic cards for both online and tabletop players.

It’s been a great first year for Magic Online and Wizards has big plans for year two. For more information regarding Magic Online, visit www.magicthegathering.com.
