Gaming News - April 2002

(April 18, 2002) - Battlefront.com and developer Fury Software today announced Strategic Command – European Theater, a turn-based grand strategy war game featuring the Second World War in Europe. As the supreme commander of the Axis or Allied forces, the player shapes the fates of the nations at war. Political options, research and upgrade of equipment, management of supply and resources and the strategic employment of one's armed forces are some of the keys to success.

Strategic Command has officially entered Beta status, and is scheduled for release this summer.  It will be available only from Battlefront.com’s online store and is not being sold in retail.

"One of the major goals for Strategic Command was to make it as playable as possible straight out of the box", says Hubert Cater, founder of Fury Software. “While this may be rare for a game of this size and scope, the intuitive interface and unique action feedback mechanisms allow the player to get right into the action. The ease of play, sophisticated artificial intelligence, multiplayer options and attention to historical detail makes Strategic Command one of the best European Theater strategy games to come out in a very long time.”

From Battlefront.com:

Starting in 1939, there are 6 major scenarios which cover each year up until 1944 – “Fall Weiss”, “Fall Gelb”, “Barbarossa”, “Fall Blau”, “Zitadelle”, “Overlord”. Game play is turn based with each turn lasting from 2 weeks to 1 month depending on the season. Designed for replayability and realism, options include fog of war, Free French forces, Partisans, scorched earth, thoroughly implemented features for sea transport, amphibious assaults, strategic bombing, industrial production, research and development, declarations of war, historical and random nation neutrality and allegiances as well as other political mechanisms.

Other “Strategic Command” Game features include:

  • Detailed Theater Wide Map covers an area that stretches horizontally from the east coast of North America to the Ural Mountains of Russia, and vertically from just below the Arctic Circle to the northern coast of Africa.
  • Classic Turn Based Hex Style Wargame which blends the “chess like” feel for combat at the strategic level with the nuance and scope of the European Theater during World War II.
  • Various Unit Types covering all the major facets of land, sea and air combat including HQs with true to life historical personalities, Corps, Armies, Tank Groups, Rocket Detachments, Air Fleets, Strategic Bombers, Battleships, Cruisers, Carriers, Subs and Transports.
