This was especially tragic because archery is easily the best aspect of the game. When you use your bow you hold the mouse button down to determine how far back you pull the string while aiming using an onscreen crosshair. When you’ve got the shot lined up and have reached the desired power, you release the mouse button to let the arrow loose. The arrow then follows a realistic trajectory as if flies from your bow. I particularly enjoyed using the bow for hunting. To hunt you need to sneak up on your prey without getting too close to spook it. You’ll need to carefully line up your first shot and then if that doesn’t bring down the prey you’ll need to lead it with your next shot to bring down the bolting animal. You can then take the meat from your kill and cook up a tasty meal for yourself.

The game makes use of a customized skill system that will let you control the development of your character. The interface for this could use a little work though, as it makes it difficult to properly play your character’s progression. Things are also hampered by the fact that you need to track down the appropriate trainer before you’re able to learn a new skill. Interface issues abound in the game, making for an unnecessarily steep learning curve. For example, when selling booty to a merchant you have to click an additional button for the merchant to offer up the gold for your items or else you’ll end up just giving everything away, and there’s no buyback or undo operation. This actually happened to me as I learned the hard way about this quirk after donating a thousand gold pieces worth of merchandise to the local merchant.

The potential is here for an enjoyable role-playing experience, but the game simply needs a lot more work to reach that potential. The game code should have been optimized, the bugs tracked down and fixed, and more thought put into the interface and design before the game was released. As it stands, this game is simply more frustrating than it is fun.

In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated: 54%. The world of Gothic 3 is filled with bugs you can not slay.
