| Sometimes it's all about teamwork. |
The rapid button pushing and button mashing that you’ll need to master can
get a little repetitive, though at the same time a little addicting. During the
game your character will perform “context-sensitive” animations as they come
across glowing “4’s” on the ground. These animations are similar to cut scenes
and you can not control the character during the animation. Some of the types of
animations might include lifting something or performing a special hero
maneuver. The glowing “4’s” are unique for each character and all you need to do
to activate the animation is stand over it and press the action/grapple key.
Here is where the rapid button mashing really takes a turn for the arcade. To
successfully complete the maneuver and perform the animation you will be
required to press a button repeatedly, or a pair of buttons, or even a sequence
of buttons. If you are unable to complete the button pushing correctly and fast
enough your character will need to restart the attempt all over again. Although
this may seem trivial at first the animations to get a little better as the game
goes on and they do get slightly more difficult, but not too difficult.
Another example of the rapid button pushing in Fantastic Four is the
different player combo attacks. Most combo attacks are 2-3 button sequences. The
cosmic button in combination with either the light attack or heavy attack will
perform a simple special attack. Interestingly enough, the game allows you to
purchase upgrades for your players and their combo attacks. When you have enough
points to make the upgrade the game with flash and you can press the ESC key to
access the upgrade menu. The upgrade menu will show you what special combos are
currently available and what their current levels are. It will also give you
some idea of how many other combos are available to be unlocked.
Fantastic Four, true to its arcade style roots, is not without its puzzles.
One of Mr. Fantastic talents is computer hacking. To successfully hack the
computers in the game you will need to move outlines of circles correctly so
that the highlighted portions align and show the number “4”. At first this may
seem a little confusing but it basically boils down to you moving the outlined
portions rapidly and repeatedly selecting the next outline until you are
successful. Don’t worry, it only takes a few attempts to pick up and understand;
much like the entire game.
Fantastic Four is definitely an arcade adventure game at its core. The rapid
button pushing and cut scenes are reminiscent of many other fun arcade games.
The only problem with this game is the lack of attention to detail. Issues like
the bad camera angles and changing the game settings should have received more
attention from the developers.
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated:
69%. Fantastic Four is your typical arcade-style button mashing
adventure game. It should remind you of playing X-Men and The Simpsons in the
arcade with the way it demands constant repetitive button pushing.
