Speaking of sounds, Call of Duty 2 has some of the most incredible sound effects to be found in a shooter to date. I can only wonder if the developers spent a lot of time shooting bullets into every material they could think of just to capture an authentic sound effect for every situation. The battles sounds are so real that they surround and encapsulate you, bringing you into the game and making you feel like the bullets whizzing past your head could actually hurt you. And there’s nothing quite as scary as the sound of enemy armor approaching your lowly infantryman – you can practically feel the weight and strength of the tank from the vibrations coming through your speakers.

You'll have to scale a cliff under fire in Normandy.
On the multiplayer side of the coin, Call of Duty 2 comes with a number of team-based games and the ubiquitous deathmatch mode. Of course team deathmatch and capture the flag are here, but you’ll also get search and destroy and headquarters modes. This last mode is unique in that it features constantly shifting headquarters points that the teams must capture and then use to establish a headquarters. Of course, controlling a headquarters earns points for the owning team, but an additional twist is added in that team members can not respawn while the headquarters is being built.

The multiplayer action is pretty exciting, but overall it doesn’t reach the high standard set by the single player campaign. This is not really a knock against the multiplayer, it’s just that the single player campaign is so impressive. One really cool feature of the multiplayer mode is the “Killcam”. This will replay your death for you so you can see just who shot you and how they did it. It’s a great feature and an effective learning tool for those looking to better their game. I also like the way smoke grenades work as a nice counter to snipers, although I’ll bet you sniper players out there will beg to differ.

In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated: 94%.  Call of Duty 2 is like a good war movie, it may not be a realistic portrayal of war but it is dramatic, compelling, and epic in scale.
