If you prefer to play using one of the existing factions, you’ll find that
they’ve each been given a new weapon in Winter Assault. The Chaos faction get
Khorne Berserkers, a powerful melee unit, the Space Marines get the Chaplain who
improves the attack of ranged units, the Eldar get Fire Dragons as a counter to
the Imperial Guard’s vehicles, and finally the Orks get the Nobz, a massively
armored, defensive melee unit.

| The carnage continues. |
Even if you never plan on leading the Imperial Guard in a multiplayer battle,
you’ll still appreciate Winter Assault for the excellent campaign included with
the expansion. The campaign is centered on the frozen world Lorn V. A gigantic
weapon known as a Titan has crashed on the world and each faction desperately
wants to claim the prize. The Imperium sends in the Imperial Guard to retrieve
their prized weapon and keep it out of the hands of the other factions, and this
is where you take command.
The campaign is actually divided into two halves named Order and Chaos. Each
half consists of five missions but there is far more gameplay here than it
sounds like. Each mission has multiple objectives and goals that are added
throughout the course of the mission and there’s a lot of gameplay here. In
fact, I was an hour into my first game of Winter Assault and I still hadn’t
finished the opening mission of the Order campaign. What really makes the
campaign a treat though is that it tells parallel stories of the conflict from
each of the two sides. The stories converge to the final climactic battles,
which you will get to fight twice, once from each side and with the opposite
goals, and then in the final mission you get to choose your side and determine
how the story will end. Good stuff!
Winter Assault gives you the things a good expansion pack should. You get a
new faction that adds a new dynamic to the gameplay without disrupting balance
and a new campaign that packs in a lot of gameplay. Dawn of War fans should
definitely pick up this expansion, and if you haven’t played Dawn of War here’s
a great excuse to pick up two great games at once.
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated:
90%. Winter Assault is an expansion game worthy of its predecessor.
