The Matrix Online
The saga of The Matrix did not end with Revolutions. The Matrix Online will let gamers take part in the struggle between man and machine as it continues on the virtual battleground of The Matrix. We were able to ask Toby Ragaini, Online Creative Director at Monolith and the Lead Designer of The Matrix Online, a few questions about the game and how it ties into The Matrix saga...
GT: How does the story in the Matrix Online tie into the films? Is it set before, during, or after the timeline in the movies?
Toby: MxO takes place immediately following Revolutions. There is a
tense truce between Zion and the Machines. However, it is very much a cold war
scenario. Neither of the sides trusts each other, and certain members of both
Zion and the Machines may in fact be attempting to sabotage the fragile peace.
The Merovingian, ever the opportunist, happily plays both sides against each
other, all while further securing his own power base. Add to this mix
independent operatives, rogue machine programs, and insane exiles and you begin
to appreciate the delicate balance of power that exists in the Matrix.
This is the state of the Matrix when the game begins. Three powerful
Organizations covertly struggle for control of the Matrix. Players must choose
sides and decide whom they want to support.
GT: There is a lot of philosophy in the Matrix movies that is drawn from many different sources and cultures. Will The Matrix Online try to incorporate these types of elements into its story or gameplay?
Toby: Absolutely. The Wachowski brothers have created a year-long script of events and character interactions that are really a continuation of the themes presented in the movies.
