Your Sim has different interests, and a different level of interest for those
interests.  Uhh meaning your Sim may only be slightly interested in the Money
interest, but very interested in the Politics interest.  However you want to
decipher that, it means that if you share an interest with another Sim, you'll
have an easier time getting along with that Sim, and making them your friend.
Conversations will last longer, and fail less often.  The interests your Sims
have are (alphabetically):

Animals
Crime
Culture
Entertainment
Environment
Fashion
Food
Health
Money
Paranormal
Politics
Sci-Fi
School
Sports
Toys
Travel
Weather
Work

You can alter your interests by going to a community lot and buying a magazine.
There are six magazines you can buy, and they are:

Rat Race - $15
  "If you want to know more about your job, your finances, and how to become
  one of those Sims with the power to take them both away, Rat Race is your
  magazine.  But remember--even if you win the race, you're still a rat!"

The Rat Race magazine changes the following interests:
  Crime
  Money
  Work

Mode:Live - $15
  "Need to know about the best hotels in Alaska?  The relative humidity of
  Alaska?  How to make a baked Alaska?  You've living the Mode: Live life."

The Mode:Live magazine changes the following interests:
  Food
  Travel
  Weather

Highbrow Review - $15
  "Highbrow Review is the perfect blend: a dose of culture, a dash of
  environmentalism, and just a pinch of hard-hitting political analysis."

The Highbrow Review magazine changes the following interests:
  Culture
  Environment
  Politics

Young Sim Magazine - $15
  "There's fun for all ages in our pages!  Get the lowdown on the latest toys,
  wildest creatures, and coolest school projects.  No matter how old you are,
  you're sure to love Young Sim magazine."

The Young Sim magazine changes the following interests:
  Animals
  School
  Toys

The Superstar Report - $15
  "Who's wearing what and dating whom plus who's playing who when and winning
  what.  Get the 411 on everything from the latest MVPs to the hottest DJs in
  The Superstar Report."

The Superstar Report magazine changes the following interests:
  Entertainment

Beyond Belief - $15
  "Are there aliens living in your neighborhood?  Do the dead still walk the
  earth?  Can knowing any of this help you live longer?  Ponder the
  imponderable and indulge your paranoia with Beyond Belief."
