"I spotted a review on Gamespot regarding this game which gave it quite a
good rating, and the following day saw it in the shops, and £10 less than retail
price! That immediately made me think that this was probably not a game to
buy... any new release that's reduced as soon as it's on the shelves isn't a
good sign, but in this case my gut feeling was wrong, The Guild is a great game,
and here's why
The idea of the game is to set yourself up with a career, whether it be a
trader, blacksmith, priest or even a thief (there are about a dozen choices in
all) and to go through life buying raw materials, manufacturing goods and
selling the end results to make profit. Once this has been done, the money made
can be ploughed back into the business, upgrading your place of work, or maybe
your own personal house if you so wish! as the money increases, along with your
skill, you can branch out and even start completely different businesses, it's
all up to you and what you decide
There is also a political agenda to the game. Everyone in the city lives their
lives and has the opportunity to run for a multitude of different "government"
jobs besides their own business, such as Informer, Spy, Town Watch (guard) and
going up to anything like Deacon, Tax Collector, even Mayor in time!
Of course to get these jobs, you have to fight your way through the crowd of
others applying for the same job, so dirty tricks, thrashings, even kidnapping
isn't too underhand! Especially to your rivals! But you can be the target of the
same things yourself so beware!
Obviously health back in the 1400's isn't what it is now, so your life span
isn't going to be 80 - 100 years old, you'll be lucky to hit mid 40's, but if
you marry and have a child, as long as he or she is 12 or older, you'll continue
the game as your offspring - no offspring, game over!
The game is completely open ended... you decide how you start off, what path you
take and how you want to play the game. You can even pick what kind of objective
you're aiming for, be it wealth, advancement or whatever.
Graphically the game is quite pretty, and the games music and sound effects do
the job. there has only been one graphical glitch I've seen, a flickering menu,
and that rights itself after a few minutes, and combat isn't so brilliant, as
it's very basic, but again it does the job and can be completely avoided if you
wish
I would recommend The Guild to anyone wanting to play a game with lastability,
and would happily rate it around 85% out of 100% Go out and buy! :-)" - Dark
