The game does a good job of giving you some leeway in how you approach your
mission goals. Games of this type, including the aforementioned
Desperados, often have a set solution for each mission and gameplay involves a
trail and error search for the solution intended by the designers. In
Robin Hood there are often multiple routes through a city's streets or a
forest's paths that will still allow you to complete your objectives. There are also buildings or areas on the maps that are entirely optional to
explore. Doing so will often reward you with more gold or special items,
but it is up to you if you want to take the extra risks to win these rewards.

Robin Hood also gives you a choice when it comes to mission selection. From your base in Sherwood Forest, you will be presented with information on
nearby caravans, or the goings on in the local towns, and given your choice of
which of these missions you want to accept. Some are definitely harder
than others, but offer greater rewards when successfully completed. Each
mission will only allow you to bring along a limited number of men, so you'll
also have to make a decision on the type of skill mix to include on your team
before beginning the mission.
While they will rest and heal, the Merry Men left behind in Sherwood won't be
sitting on their hands while you're gone. You can assign them to
production stations to have them produce arrows, healing herbs, and other items
that you can then take with you on later missions. They can also train at
an archery range, or work on their fighting skills, making them more valuable
the next time you select them to join you on a mission.
In a world full of science fiction and fantasy based strategy games, it is
nice to see one set in the unique but familiar world of Robin Hood. While
it might not appeal to the strategy gamer who enjoys throwing masses
of units into frenzied combat, it is an enjoyable change of pace
from most other games in the genre and can also be enjoyed by those who like
puzzle games. If you're looking for something a little bit different to
round out your strategy game library, then you should give Robin Hood a close
look.
