"It is still early days for me - i have only owned the game for a
week.- so i'm barely able to give a full commentary on the game.
However, from my experiences so far i have been at times and to differing
degrees; confused, excited, in awe, frustrated, annoyed, deflated, invigorated
and some others that don't spring straight to mind.
The scope of the game is exciting for anyone who is interested in the diplomacy,
strategy and technology of the years immediately preceding, during and after
WWII. The first problem you will encounter is the manual which, though
necessarily large (in terms of content if not physical size), is somewhat
daunting and not easy to digest on first reading. The Manual Writers job has not
been made any easier though by the non-intuitive interface which can be
frustrating for those used to Microsoft Windows/Office left click/right click,
double click, drag/drop, ctrl and shift functionality. This is an annoyance but
doesn't ruin the game, you simply have to get used to it and spend more time
than should be necessary to order your affairs.
So far i am finding the game has great potential in terms of the number of
things you can do, building armies researching a plethora of tech trees,
diplomacy (although influencing nations doesn't seem to have any obvious
effects), deciding your battle strategies and generally the ability to re-write
history. I am currently trying to decide which troops i should repatriate and/or
use to bolster my middle east defenses, should i give up India for now ?
This is also the main problem with the game, the sheer size of it and the
difficulty in actually deciphering what is going on - i guess this is a true
reflection of war. I have had units disbanded automatically simply because i did
not know they were there and have left them unsupplied. I think you can
determine this through the ledgers having read the manual again but i believe it
should be obvious when a unit is out of supply, they would be shouting very loudly
for help and this would soon come to your attention in real life. I think the
game could do with a help assistant, a bit like your closest advisor who might
say, "Premier, may i suggest we pay some attention to our armies in SE Asia,
they appear short of supplies" etc.
I will return here and let you all know how i am getting on because i plan to
persevere with this game, the temptation to be able to mess with world history
is just too much to keep me away - i hope it will be worth the effort.
I once let the game run through on fast to 1945 (i was playing as Britain),
Italy took over the UK (with the exception of Belfast) and Germany seemed to
hold nearly all of Europe. Since this i have become quite determined to see the
full war through to the end, micro-management or not, i need to find out if i
have what it takes to turn the tide in favor of the allies." - Gunners
