The lack of any sophistication to the monster attacks translates into simple party combat.  Once combat begins, there is a feeling that the player is more an observer than a participant.  Often battles will involve monitoring the party's health level and hitting the 'use health potion' key when needed as they just slug it out.  Also, players will need to be careful about clicking too far ahead when moving the party since attacks sometimes come by surprise from the sides, and the party will seem determined to carry out the move order before responding to the player's frantic clicking on the attacking monsters.

ScreenshotsIn addition to the single player campaign, Dungeon Siege includes a multiplayer game.  Players can form teams and go exploring one of the online worlds or even go head to head in player combat games.  The multiplayer game can be quite a bit of fun, if you can find a game to join.  Dungeon Siege can be played for free through The Zone, but the available games list is very large and there is no way to tell which games are password protected.  Clicking games at random quickly reveals that a lot of games are indeed password protected and it can be frustrating trying to find an open game to join.  Microsoft really needs to address this issue to make finding a multiplayer game a better experience.  Of course the player can create his/her own game, but by default other players will be locked from joining a game in progress.  If a player is not aware of this and does not change the option, he/she might wonder why no one has joined in even after hours of play.

In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated: 85%.  Great graphics and some innovative concepts make this one worth a close look, but a thin plot, linear play, and monster AI issues prevent it from achieving true greatness.  Those looking for a hack and slash dungeon romp will find plenty of action in Dungeon Siege, but its appeal may be limited to hardcore RPG players.
