Rally Trophy is no walk in the park by any means.  The tracks are fiendishly difficult at times and the computer controlled competition is brutal.  It will take most players some time before they are familiar enough with the cars and the tracks in order to provide a little competition for the computer-controlled racers.  The game also provides arcade and multiplayer modes, which feature smaller circuit courses and allow you to compete on the tracks at the same time as other drivers.  Some players may find themselves more competitive in these modes since the tracks and competition are not quite as demanding as in the rally mode.

Driving each of the cars is challenging fun.  Each car has a slightly different feel to it and it will take players some time to master all 11.  These aren't the high-tech racing vehicles of today, and Rally Trophy does an excellent job of conveying the seat-of-the-pants driving feel of these cars - you'll feel the man and machine connection more than in any other game.  The sense that you are operating a vehicle is well-conveyed.  For example, you'll almost swear that you can feel the tires start to slip as the surface becomes softer and feel them bite the road as you pull out of a controlled slide.

One of the downsides of the game is that you compete in the races with a companion who shares your car with you.  While he does provide some benefit by warning you of upcoming turns and their severity, he is more annoying than anything else.  When things aren't going well, he will chide and insult the player above and beyond the call of duty.  This can be especially frustrating when you are just starting out and trying to get the hang of the game.  When you are trying to recover from a spinout the last thing you need is a copilot yelling at you to get back on the road...

In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated: 87%. Perhaps a bit too difficult for the casual gamer, but racing fans will certainly appreciate the attention to detail and gorgeous look of Rally Trophy.  The ability to drive such meticulously modeled vehicles, most of which are not available in any other racing games, is also a big plus in the game's favor.
