Tired of that darn mime showing up every time you throw a party?  Like you need him to remind you that your guests would rather be getting a nice relaxing root canal than spend another minute at one of your dud parties.  Well fear no more, cause we're here to help you out and get you climbing that social register in no time!

The first step to successful party hosting is understanding just how the game determines if you party is happening or not.  The key to a party's success is the overall mood of your guests.  This is rated on a 200 point scale from 100 (hide the sheep!) to -100 (go to sleep!).  Sorry to break the news to you, but the game is working against you on this one.  Your guests' fun rating steadily drops as time goes by - if you keep them entertained and raise their fun ratings, they'll just start to head south again.  If your party's score drops to 15 or less, then watch out, it's mime time.

So what's a Sim host to do?  Well, the secret lies in the timing.  The natural tendency is to have everything ready before your guests arrive and to try and have them all show up at once.  Unfortunately, this is not the way to go about things.  Instead, start small, about five total party goers.  Start with the neighbors with whom you have the strongest relationships, it will be easier to keep the mood high at this stage of the party.  After an hour or so, begin to invite more guests and bring in an entertainer.  The larger the party, the bigger the bonus to the party's success, so use late arriving guests to inject new lifeblood into the festivities.  If you notice any unhappy Sims at this point, ask them to leave.  No need having a partypooper bring down everyone else.  If your party is going well, party crashers will begin to arrive after two hours.  Their extra bodies will boost your party's mood, but don't waste too much time interacting with them.  They aren't permanent residents of the neighborhood and won't score you any lasting relationship points.

It is important that your own Sim's needs are all in the green before the party begins.  That way you can monitor his/her needs and use them as a benchmark for your guests.  When your Sim begins to get hungry, make sure there is food available for the guests.  When your Sim begins to get tired, begin dismissing guests and shutting down the party.  You get the idea...
